Liability that would come with cashing deposit returns

If I receive a check for my deposit that is less than should rightfully be returned to me from the landlor, will I have still be able to collect the additional ammount owed to me if I cash the check?

Yes, if you endorse the check with a reservation of claim, plainly written under your endorsement.
