Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Can they get us for the money?

My boyfriend and I signed a year contract for a low income apartment in charlottesville Virginia. We left after 2 months. Now they are trying to get us for the whole lease when they said that they were going to move someone else in there after 4 months. What is the law on this? Isn't it true that they can't get us for the full lease anymore? Thank you.

Re: Can they get us for the money?

Residential landlords are required to try to mitigate damages by reletting the unit, BUT that does not require them to prefer your unit over others. So if they tried and failed, you are liable for the full lease term.
