Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia
I moved to VA from out of state and purchased a 1 bedroom (700 sq. ft) condominiun nearly 2 years ago and thought I had fulfilled all of my obligations regarding the purchase. On 12/2/09 I received a phone call from the current building manager telling me if I didn't change the utilities to my name by 12/4/09 they would be shut off by the management company that sold me the condo. SInce I had put the utility bill on auto pay and had never received any unpaid bills or notices I had no idea what it was about. The current bldg manager recommended my paid statements be faxed to the mgmt company and offered to do it for me. I tried to access the untility company records on line and received a message that I already had an account with my email address but I was not able to get any additional information. Since I did not receive a response to my fax by 12/3/09 I contacted the utility company directly. I have since learned the bill I was paying on auto billing was only for the gas and not the electric and so I had the electric bill immediately put in my name. Now I have received a notice with an invoice from the management company telling me I owe $894.00 for 11/08/to 11/09 and what they say they paid for electricity for the unit. Since they sent an invoice and not the bill from the utility company I have no way of knowing if the amounts are even accurate. I want to fulfill any responsibilities I have but also need to know what legal standing I have since I was not notified at any time in the past 2 years of any problem. Thank you for your assistance.

Recommendation: Pay first what they claim is owed and then further investigate
the accuracy of the claim to determine whether you may be entitled to any
reimbursement on your remittance.
