Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Moving out Fees

A year into a friends lease I moved into his townhouse and payed him rent which he then payed to the rental agency. Upon moving out they wrote us a letter saying that the two cats I had were there illegally and that they had noticed there presence while showing the townhouse for the last 5 months. They said that we owed them 2400 dollars according to the lease. I was unaware or this clause and still am waiting to get a copy of the lease but was wondering if upon first noticing the cats they should have notified us?

Re: Moving out Fees

Depends upon the exact languasge in the lease. Unless the cats damaged or degraded the property

in some provable manner during your tenure, I would refuse their demand for $2400 as exorbitant.
