Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia
Non-married couple needing guidance with property
My friend lived with a female for about `10 yearsand they co-own their home. The other decides to split and about two years ago - changed mailing address to her new girfriends and hasn't actually lived in the home for all this time. My friend has been making 100% payments on mortgage since the split. The ex always keeps my friend on an 'emotional hook' by playing the only thing she has - this property. In my eyes she wants to 'have her cake, eat it too' by having a relationship with both women and is using the phrase 'you can't get me out of your life cuz I'm still co-owner of the house' all the time. My friend does not want to sell this home at all. The ex refuses to be sold out. What, if anything, can my friend do?

Re: Non-married couple needing guidance with property
Your friend, the one making all the payments, may be able to sue and recover 1/2 of these payments from the "ex". If so, your friend might obtain a lien against the ex's interest. The dollars involved would likely be enough to justify your friend seeking advice from an attorney.
