Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia
I purchased a new pair of work shoes for my boyfriend about 2 months ago. The shoes were a gift and I was in no way obligated to purchase them for him. Unfortunately, today my new puppy chewed one of the shoes (as puppies do) and my boyfriend is insistent that I am obligated to replace the shoes. He says this is his ONLY pair of work shoes and I must replace them by Monday. Although I do make more money, my boyfriend is gainfully employed in a well paying Federal government job. Further, the other 2 pairs of shoes as well as most of the clothes in his closet that he wears for work were gifts from me. I feel that just I as I am not permitted to seek payment from him for these clothes as they were gifts, I am also not obligated to replace them since they were gifts that were freely given. Please advise. Thank you!

The problem from a legal perspective here is that once you gave these shoes as a gift to this ingrate, the shoes became his personal property, and if your dog
chewed one of them up, then legally you're responsible for the damage and if the
matter were put before a court of law, the court would likely rule against you and find for the ingrate.
However, from the perspective of Mother Equity, I have no doubt but that her
sympathies would side with you in the matter, and, furthermore, this "boyfriend",
a term I use most advisedly, may actually have done you a favor in revealing, some of his true nature in this incident, a red flag of sorts, which, perhaps, should signal to you that it may be time for you to be looking for a new boyfriend.
