Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

I just received a notice that county inspectors will be going door to door entering peoples homes for inspections. They will be looking for illegal/unpermitted improvements, illegal appertmants and also evidence of how many people occupy the dwelling. I feel this is an illegal search without probable cause or warrant. Can we tell the inspectors to go away and come back with a warrant? We have owned our home for 40 years and they have never before conducted such searches. I have nothing illegal to hide, I just feel this is an invasion of privacy and an illegal search.

Before the inspectors arrive at your house, I would recommend that you

first send written notice to the agency responsible for these inspections,

noting your objections to what you consider an unacceptable invasion of your privacy before you tell these inspectors upon their arrival that you will deny them entry.

And, of course, you should keep a copy of this letter for your records in case you're later summoned to court regarding the matter.
