Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

How to reflect legal name change on real estate deed

I recently had my first name legally changed and want to reflect this change on the deed to my real estate property.

When I called the clerk of court, she muttered vaguely about having to issue a new deed and rudely ordered me to "go see an attorney". I asked if going through an attorney was necessary for such a simple matter and was told "Well ,no. But I'm certainly not going to tell you how to go about it."

So, in short my question is how do I go about changing the name on my property deed to what is now my legal first name?

The easiest way to have your name change reflected in the land records would be to docket the name change order in the land records. If the order was entered in the same county as the real estate, it is already in the chain of title, although I'd probably record the order anyway.
