Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Selling a dirtbike to a 17 year old

I just sold a dirtbike to a 17 year old. After the mother of the 17 year old came home she didn't approve of the purchase. The mother called me on the phone and asked me to take the bike back (not in a pleasant way). She told me that it wasn't possible for a minor to enter into an agreement (verbal) for the purchase of this item. It was 1700$(cashiers check). What laws are at play here? Do have to take it back? Is there some law she could hot me with?

Thanks,

EricV

Re: Selling a dirtbike to a 17 year old

A minor under the age 18 is permitted under law to disaffirm his contractual obligations, unless they involve the so-called "necessaries of life",

i.e. food, clothing, and shelter.

A dirtbike, quite obviously, would not qualify

as a neccessary----although, I'm quite certain there are some who would disagree.

Bottom line: If mom insists, you must take back the bike and return the money.
