Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

If we signed a contract to buy a house in August and it hasnt happened yet and now we have found another house, are we bond to the contract ,or can we change our minds, and if so, can he sue us or do we have to pay him to get out of the contract? Thanks, Patricia Herndon/ Virginia.
