Legal Question in Tax Law in Virginia

owed back state taxes on business from 1982

My husband had a small business back in 1982. A week ago he got a call from a collection agency saying he owed them 5,260. We have had many refunds since this, why did they not inform us then instead of waiting 25 years. My husband is on a disability income and we don't have that kind of money. What are our legal rights?

You should have an attorney look into this, their right to collect may have expired.
