Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia
77 in a 55 (reckless)
I was found speeding with a stationary radar in Fairfax county on the beltway (near springfield IC) about a week ago. What are my options to get this reduced to a simple speeding ticket? I have a clean record, except I recently moved to virginia so I do not have a good ''history'' meaning I have 0 points on my dmv record. Additionally I have no previous speeding tickets since 1999 in the state of Washington. Is this something I can do on my own or do I *really* need a lawyer? To me it seems like a simple bargain but I am new to the county and could use a little advice. Additionally I was driving in the right lane, it was clear conditions, no vehicles in front or behind me at midnight. No issues with the trooper, as I pulled over immediately. Also what are the typical rates in fairfax county for lawyer services?

Re: 77 in a 55 (reckless)
Unless you were charged with reckless driving(class 1 misdemeanor), you should be able to handle this on your own without a lawyer. On the morning of your hearing in Fairfax Co. Traffic Court, go early and arrange to see the prosecutor assigned to your case. Explain any mitigating circumstances which might be applicable.(If your driving record from Washington State is good, bring along a copy to show the prosecutor.) Then offer to enter a plea of guilty to a reduced speeding charge (9 over the limit if you can get it).
If for some reason the ticketing officer is not there, it might be possible to get the matter dismissed but this would require a defense counsel who "knows the ropes", so to speak, in traffic court.
