Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

Altered Decal on car

I was charged by the Arlington police for altering decals on licence plates. I looked it up on the website and that is a class 1 misdemeanor. I recently aquired my deceased husband's car. I just finish making payments in November. The DMV would not let me transfer the title until I got it from the loan company. So I have had expired DMV tags up until I recieved the title last week. So mean while, I put a DMV licence sticker on my car that I payed for from another car that had been donated. I had just gotten my new tags but did not have time to display them. So i got stopped for having dead tags. The police officer asked why I had new stickers on old plates and I told him I had gotten them from DMV and had stuck them on my car. So he ticked me for altered licence plates. I am worried that they will stick me with a huge fine. Has anyone gone to jail for this? I have a clean record and never been in trouble before. How much will they fine me and what should I do?

Re: Altered Decal on car

Better see a lawyer about this who's familiar with criminal law practice in the courts of Arlington County.

Re: Altered Decal on car

I would advise hiring an attorney for this one,

perhaps Don Hall from Fairfax. Not me on this one.

Having a misdemeanor conviction on your record

will have consequences for the rest of your life.

It will cost you less in the long run to hire

an attorney and beat it then the life-long

consequences. It would be a false economy not

to get good legal help on this.

Arlington can be erratic. If they want to be,

they can be SOB's and not interested in

compromising. You never know.
