Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

How can I get my car back?

I let my little sister use my car while I was out of the country, and now she will not give it back to me. I am the one paying the monthly payments and insurance; it is in my name. How can I get the car back?

Re: How can I get my car back?

If you're the owner of record and can determine where the car is likely to be at a suitable time, you can simply go over there(with your extra set of keys which surely you were foresightful enough to have made) and simply drive the car off. If, however, for whatever reason you do not possess such duplicate keys, with title in hand you can arrange to engage the services of a key maker

who will meet you at the predetermined site, and once this person is satisfied that indeed title for the vehicle is in your name, s/he will proceed to contour a set of keys or a key which

will the open the vehicle's door and allow you to start the engine.

If none of the above is feasible since your sister has secreted the vehicle in the steep fastness of a mountaintop aerie(or its near equivalent), closely watched 24/7 by all-seeing cyclopic androids, with no possiblity of your ever getting anywhere near the vehicle, you will then need to resort to the remedy in general district court known as Warrant in Detinue to secure through the court's order the return of your property which is being unjustly and unlawfully withheld from your possession by the person(your sister)so-named in the Warrant.
