My husband is a police officer. He was not present when I recevied a speeding ticket, but can he appear with me in court to ask questions on my behalf?

Re: who can appear with me in court

Hearings in Virginia General District Traffic Courts are, for the most part, rather informal affairs. However, I doubt that any presiding judge

would allow your husband to question formally at the hearing or trial of the case, witnesses or other parties in the case, notwithstanding, his status as a police officer. Your husband, to put in simply, has no proper legal standing in your case either as a party, witness, or legal advocate

to interject himself into formal proceedings by asking the questions which you have suggested.

I would, however, suggest that, if possible, you

bring him along as his experience as a police officer in traffic cases could be valuable in

informal discussions outside the courtroom with the Assistant Commonwealth Attorney who may be

willing to settle for something less than what you were cited for, and your husband's presence

and questions at these informal talks would be perfectly approriate and possibly useful to your

case.
