Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

Should the doctor be held liable for my grandfather's wreck?

My grandfather is 79 years old and has alzheimer's (which was diagnosed a year ago). His doctor told my step-grandmother that they did not need to take his driver's liscense. Two days ago my grandfather crossed a median hit three cars on the wrong side of the road and caused major damage. He flipped one of the vehicles he hit three times. My grandfather's truck caught on fire but he is amazingly fine. His alzheimer's is so bad he couldn't remember where he was going when he wrecked (and this was a few hours later.) Can the doctor be held liable? Also, my stepgrandmother says they don't need a lawyer. Could you tell me reasons why they do need one?

Re: Should the doctor be held liable for my grandfather's wreck?

In the event that either your grandfather is sued

either by any or all of the three drivers whom he collided with and/or their respective insurance companies, or he himself decides to sue the doctor who may have given ill advice, your step-grandmother is dead wrong: your grandfather, will, indeed, need a lawyer.

Only, in the event that none of the above comes to pass will this, presumably, gentle and well intentioned lady be correct in regard to her assessment as to whether your grandfather will need the sevices of a lawyer.
