Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia
Can they do that?
Just a general question: Can a police officer run your license plate tags, as an example, just sitting at a red light right behind you, or must the driver commit a traffic violation of any sort in order for the police officer to run tags. In essence, can police officers just drive around running tags on their system or must they catch a driver commiting a traffic offense and THEN run the tags?? This would help tremendously and i appreciate it-Victor

Yep, the officers can run the tags any time they please (and for any reason or no reason), and, yes, it's all perfectly legal.
