Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

Hello,

My mother was in a car accident, she got hit from behind, the car behind her failed to stop on the traffic signal. The hit was so strong, it pushed my mom's can into the intersection. She had a 1 year old baby in the car. My mom stoped when she felt safe to stop so she doesn't get herself and the baby into another accident, it was maybe 500 feet or so. Then the witness helped my mom to call 911 to report the accident. The officer and my momj then returned to the accident placve and there they did all the paperwork. After all, my mom was given a criminal traffic ticket for "hit and run". I spoke to the officer and he said he had to give her the ticket becaouse she did not stop right after she got hit...???

The question: is this something was legaly right for the officer to charge my mom with hit and run or this was a mistake? We did go to the court but the judge scheduled a trile without us even explaining the case. I did speak to the officer 2nd time and he stated that he will try to dismiss the case at the time of the trial. Should I believe him?

No, your mother should be represented by a lawyer the next time she

appears in court (in my opinion).
