(ex: stopping you for cutting off

someone but charging you with failure

The term "pretextual stop" is sometimes used to describe traffic stops by police officers where the stop itself is allegedly merely a cover or pretext for the real reason or purpose of the stop which is supposedly something entirely different from the reason initially offered by the officer.
