Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

I recently got pulled over on I-495 near Gallows for a bunch of reasons. The only one that is concerning to me is the one where the officer looked at my inspection sticker and ask me "where did you get that sticker?" I responded a gas station, and after deliberating in his car he said he needed to take a closer look at it. He took the sticker off and told me it was fraudulent and after what seemed like a slew of questions he asked me if it's fake and where did i get it. I tried to be as vague as possible but ended up admitting that the sticker was fake and i paid for it. I got a ticket for a fraudulent inspection sticker, and am currently shaking in my boots. The officer said I need to appear in court for this one. What should I do? Should I get a lawyer or should I wait till court for them to tell me that i need a lawyer? What consequences does this ticket have? Can I beat this? My current driving record is probably a -3.

It appears to be a class 3 misdemeanor and not a jailable offense with a fine

between $100 and $1000. See Va. Code Secs. 46.2-1173 and 46.2-1187.

No, you're unlikely to need a lawyer to handle this matter but would be well

advised to bring proof of a valid inspection for your vehicle by the time you come to court.
