Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

Reckless Driving

I was recently pulled over for going 85 in a 70 mph area on I-85 in Mecklenberg County. I was cited for Virginia Code 46.2.862, reckless driving by speed. I realize that this could mean a $2500 fine and/or a year in jail plus a suspended license. I have a court date but I don't know if I should hire an attorney or just plead guilty and beg for mercy (I have one prior ticket for going 75 in a 65 zone). The problem is I'm a Maryland resident. How will this affect my Maryland license? And will the judge, Charles Warren, look more favorably on the fact that I'm a dean's list student at a college in South Carolina (another reason why I need to keep my license, since I'm so far from home)? Would it help if I took a defensive driving class in South Carolina, would the Virginia courts recognize a certificate from out of state? Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Re: Reckless Driving

Under no circumstances should you plead guilty to reckless driving which would mean a criminal misdemeanor conviction on your record

with the possibility of numerous adverse consequences for your coming years.

Retain an attorney, if at all possible, to represent you in this matter and who may be able to get the reckless charge reduced to a speeding infraction.
