Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

I was riding my motorcycle when I was pulled over by an officer because he said he could not see my liscense plates. My plate was bent up under the bike a little bit because otherwise it would touch the tire. When he pulled me over he asked me for my registration. I did not have my registration on me. The officer said that he tried to verify my registration but that he was unable to. I called my girlfriend and she was able to give me all of the information off the registration but the officer would not except that. He said he was going to impound the bike and that I would need to show proof of registration to get it out. I called DMV and they confirmed that my information is in good standing and said they were willing to fax soemthing to the police department. The officer said this is not possible. Bottom line - even after showing proof of registration and even though this was not my error I am still responsible to pay the towing and impound fee. They also expect me to take another day off work to show up in court to fight this charge. I do not think this is fair nor do I think it is right. He gave me a ticket for not carrying my registration - isn't that enough?

Yes, I would think so, but if the law allows for impoundment of the bike

under the circumstances described, then you're pretty much stuck with going through whatever legal process that is necessary to retrieve it.
