Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia
I got my first ticket today after 30 years of a perfect driving record. The ticket is written for going 47 in a 25 mph school zone. Should I just pay the fine or is there any reason to hire an attorney to minimize the charge and any impact it might have on my insurance?
Thanks,
T

If you truly have a spotless record after 30 years most judges are willing to hear you out. An attorney will know how to best present that information and what to ask the judge to do with your charge. You can certainly call an attorney and get an opinion specific to your court and a quote on a fee to help make up your mind. You might also find out how much your insurance will go up so you know that cost too.
This ticket should be reducible to around 34mph in a 25mph zone, given the facts described. And, depending upon the particular court involved, you could even be allowed to attend a court approved driver's improvement course in lieu of pleading guilty which would allow you to emerge from this incident without a record of conviction.
Attorneys are able to find technicalities at times to help you out. In addition, the prosecutors will not speak to the defendants directly in some jurisdictions prior to court - preventing you from getting a good deal up front. You may have to deal with the judge. Hope you get a compassionate judge! Good luck. Attorney Sheryl Shane. Web: www.sherylshanelaw.com.
