First time ticket for speeding 66mph on a 45mph

I got my first ticket for speeding 21mph over the speed limit, and the officer that stopped me let me off easy with a speeding ticket instead of reckless. He caught me with a speed gun. At $5 for every mile i went over and ''costs'' my ticket is $162. I have been told that since this is my first ticket I should go to court. I want to know how this is going to affect my driving record, what i should do, and how is me going to court going to help me?

If possible, take a Driver Improvement/Education course before the court date.(Some of these have now, apparently, been approved by DMV to be taken online.) When you appear for court, talk with the prosecutor before your case is called and see whether he or she will agree to a reduced speeding charge in return for your plea of guilty. Bring your own copy of your DMV driving record.

You should be aware, however, that a conviction on any speeding charge will likely cause some increase in your auto insurance premium in the following year and is therefore one good reason to go to court to see whether you can get the speeding charge reduced.

Another reason to go is to receive fewer points assessed against your DMV driving record if in fact you are successful in getting the charge reduced.
