Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

Urgent! Court this Thursday for Driving without valid registration.

My bf got pulled over because our tags were not registered 3 months after we purchased our car from a dealership. We were very shocked because we had hard plates and a permanent registration. The cop told us the dealership must've made a mistake in their system somewhere and we should check it out with them. He was very nice and let us go. We called the dealership immedidately and they told us the car needed emissions and to bring it in. We made an appointment that weekend. In between the call and the appointment which was a about 3 days, a cop in a different county ran my plates randomly and pulled me over. I explained to him why my tags didn't pull up in the Dmv system and he decided to issue me a summons anyways. I was not speeding at the time or violating any traffic law. I was not told i wasn't allowed to drive in the meantime by the other cop so I was very upset and still am as I don't believe this is my fault and that I should pay the fine. What can I do cause I cannot afford a lawyer or the fine. The car is now registered, and an emissions test done. Any advice at all? Or similar experience with a positive outcome perhaps?

You could send a written demand to the dealership requesting reimbursement for your costs/expenses

arising from the apparent negligence of the dealership. Then, if they refuse your demand or fail to pay up for whatever reason, sue them in small claims court.
