Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia
Va town/country speeding ticket?
Got caught going 60mph in a 45mph speed limit zone on a road with 4+ different names. The first two names of the road leading up to the section of road i got caught on were 25mph, given that the sections were marked well with multiple signs. Note: The change between the second and third names mark the town/county limits. At the beginning of the third name, there is a single speed limit sign for 45mph. Within the section of road named as the third, there is NO other general speed limit sign and several intersecting roads, at least one which doesn't dead-end. I got tagged near the end of the third section and pulled over within the fourth named section of this one, single road (the fourth section has NO general speed limit signs). I'm not sure about the route numbers; whether or not they change from name to name. I'm curious where the default county road speed limit (55mph) starts and where the posted single-sign speed limit (45mph) ends. And, whether or not i was indeed in the 45mph zone, what law satisfies this 'truth'?...and how should i proceed in court? Note: by general speed limit signs, i am refering to the white, square signs as apposed to the cautionary yellow, diamond signs.

Re: Va town/country speeding ticket?
It would seem that with the number of merging roads involved with uncertain and/or confusing speed limit information as you;ve described it, that you've probably got enough there already to raise reasonable doubt concerning your guilt as to the infraction charged, and, accordingly, you should make that case to the prosecutor assigned to your matter before the case is called on the morning of its scheduled hearing date.
Once this prosecutor becomes aware of the at least somewhat confusing facts associated with your case, she or he may be willing to offer you a reduced speeding charge (and possible fine) in return for your plea of guilty.
