Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

Belongings without a will or probate

My fathers wife passed away recently. She had no will or life insurance and plenty of debt. My father paid for the funeral and I sent (for my father) each of her 3 daughters a box of their mothers personal items. One of the daughters has recently called threatening a lawsuit if I do not mail all of her mothers items to her. I do not reside with my father and have no personal effects from this woman. What could my personal exposure to this lawsuit possibly be?

Re: Belongings without a will or probate

Send the threatening one a letter officially informing her that you have none of her mother's effects in your possession and that you have made a good faith effort to ensure that each of the

daughters received a share of the effects that were available after their mother's death.

Retain a copy of this letter for your records

in case the matter should resurface at some future time.
