Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

My father just died. His will names me as executrix. According to the will, I am to receive his car. How can I transfer title of this car to me as soon as possible? Do I have to wait until the estate is settled to drive the car?

Virginia DMV has a form, VSA 24, for transfer ot title to heirs. It is to be used if no executor or administrator has been appointed, so if you have no yet been appointed, use the form to put the car in your name, then go to the probate office to get formally appointed as executor.

If you have been appointed executor, you must go to DMV with:

1.Certified or notarized death certificate

2.Vehicle title

3.Court-issued document or will appointing the executor or administrator

4.Proof of Address

Upon payment of appropriate fees a new title will be prepared.
