Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

How to find out if parent had a will

A relative located her biological father 4 years ago after he agreed to a DNA test. They became close. One year ago, he was diagnosed with cancer and also got married (not sure which came first). He passed away last week, and his wife has made every effort to keep his daughter at a distance. The daughter was his only child, and is likely entitled to part of his estate. How can she find out if there was a will if the wife does not probate it?

Re: How to find out if parent had a will

If the will is not probated, then there is very likely nothing in the estate to be distributed to relatives other than the wife which would likely involve assets which she held jointly with her husband with right of survivorship or, perhaps, life insururance or pension benefits with the wife

as the designated beneficiary.(All of these aforementioned assets would pass directly to the wife without the need for probate.)
