I'm the only heir. Do I still need to file for executorship?

Possibly not. The real question is whether there are any assets that cannot be transferred without qualifying to become the executor. Those usually are stock accounts, perhaps some bank accounts, etc. Any real estate passes to you as heir and your chain of title is shown by the recordation of the death certificate.

If you are uncertain, you can make an appointment with the probate office where the decedent died and explain the situation to them; you should get from that office the ground rules that fit you particular circumstances.
