Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

I recieved a letter the other day from my apartment complex stating that I owe them $80.00 for a past due amount that was transferred over from the company that owned it previously. The apartment complex was bought out approximately one month ago. I have lived at the address for the past 3 months. I have paid all my rent on time, in full and in a timely fashion. When I called to ask about the past due amount the only answer that I got was "It was with the old company, we do not know what it is for." I have called both companies and requested to speak to the finance department to find proof and paperwork on what this "past due amount" is for. I have yet to recieve a answer or see any paperwork except for a typed letter from the company promting me to pay this $80.00 amount within 48 hours. My question is do I have to pay this amount if paperwork or proof cannot be shown to me at my request. Thank you.
