In the state of virginia , do I have to leave my estate to my child or can i give it to someone else?

You can leave it to whomever you want as long as you make your wishes clear in a valid will.

Mr. Hendrickson is, as usual, correct. However, if you have a wife who is left out of the will she would be able to make a claim for a portion of your estate.
