Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

are wills public recrd

about a year ago my freinds grandfather died, leaving a very large estate to multiple family members. He was notified by his aunt , the executress and a lawyer, that he would be receiving a modest sum. She has not offered to show him the will and gets ''sore'' when the subject comes up. How can he get a copy ?

Check with the clerk of the probate court which has jurisdiction over the administration of the decedent's estate. The will may be on file there with other documents relating to the administration of the estate and, if so, anyone is free to review it as it is considered a public document.
