workman's comp

hi i am a field service technician doing service calls at fort belvior in virginia i took a break to get something to drink while on the base and slipped down a flight of stairs hurting my back been out for seven days company said they could not do workman's comp because i wasn't in the building is that true?

No, that cannot be true since you were on the base carrying out your work as a field service technician and whether the particular injury you suffered happened inside a base building where you were working or on a flight of stairs outside or leading up to the building is irrelevant and you should file your claim for workman's compensation.
