Legal Question in Disability Law in Washington
suspension
suspended from work without reasons, though later I was told from a third party the reason had been because I was stuttering towards the employees. Due to this another employee who has a speech impediment -also stuttering- believed that I was harassing him. I took speech therapy as a child for stuttering and a lisp, to this day I cannot control my stuttering without concentration. I attempted to tell my manager that I had this impediment, but his response to my defense had been, ''We have numerous reports of you stuttering towards the other employees as well.'' It is my belief that this would reiterate my reasoning for the ordeal. I was suspended for a week, and during that week lost around thirty four hours of work -scheduled- about twenty two hours normal pay and twelve hours overtime. the amount being around four hundred dollars. I was suspended without notification, and when informed of my disability I was informed that it held no relevance in my favor. What can I do?

Re: suspension
Here are a variety of things to do.
(1) Ask for the reason for your suspension in writing.
(2) Look at your employee handbook and follow the procedure for reporting illegal discrimination (the procedure will be the same no matter what type of discrimination). For example, it's possible you are supposed to call a certain phone number or talk with a certain HR person.
(3) If there are at least 8 employees, file a complaint with the WA State Human Rights Commission.
(4) Hire an attorney.
(5) Obtain a letter from your doctor stating what your disability is and what accommodation is needed.
