Legal Question in Administrative Law in Washington

How long does a felony stay on your record?

I am living in Washington state and I am thinking about going to law school but I have a felony from monetary theft and was convicted in 2006, after how long do I have to state that I have a conviction? I am also wondering if this will give me a problem getting into law school or taking the bar. by the time I apply the conviction will be 6 years old and by the time I take the bar it will be 9 years old. Thanks, Lisa

For starters, contact the bar association at www.wsba.org and discuss this with them. If they make any promises, such as "it won't be a problem after ten years," get that in writing. You don't want to spend a fortune on law school only to be told "no" after you graduate. (On the other hand, a law degree is equivalent to a Masters and is a really great education regardless of whether or not you ever become an attorney).

You posted to "administrative law" - you should really post under "criminal law" and ask other attorneys whether your felony can ever get expunged. I don't practice in this area and don't know the answer without research.

Good luck,

Merry
