Legal Question in Business Law in Washington
I recently made a hair appointment at a local hair salon. I made other arrangements and forgot to cancel the appointment. The night of the appointment and about 45 minutes after the appointment my phone rang my husband answered it and told the caller that I was just about to sit down for dinner and asked if I could call him back. The salon owner said no it was very important that he talk to me about a missed hair appointment. When I got on the phone he asked if it was me I said yes, this is ____. He then said rather angrily that I had a hair appointment tonight about 45 minutes ago. I said I'm sorry I forgot about that. He said well I charge a fee for missed appointments, and I called you yesterday to remind you. I said well I didn't get that call or message, How much is this fee? He said $35. I said I didn't sign anything and I'm sorry but I'm not going to be paying that fee. He just said Fine and them mumbled something else that I couldn't hear and hung up.
My question is: Can he charge me a fine for missing an appointment? Especially when I didn't sign anything didn't know about it and didn't get the reminder call? Are there any other repercussions?

Any attorney will say charging for missed appointments is a standard practice with most hair salons. The biggest repercussion is they will not cut your hair again unless you pay the missed appointment fee. Consult with a business attorney in your area for specific advice.
