Legal Question in Business Law in Washington
I was wondering what is my recourse for someone who I had done work for who is now unwilling to pay me in Washington State. Last year I went into business with an individual who had promised a 50/50 split on labor billed. Despite repeated attempts to legitimize our partnership I could never get him to file paperwork needed. I decided to end our working relationship in May 2015 due to the fact he spent money we had set aside for taxes as well he hadn't been paying the insurance for the business. The way I figure it he owes me $3,150 for the last job I completed with him, around $800-1,000 for previous jobs and reimbursement of $500 for tools we mutually purchased taking into account a 30% depreciation of value. My concern is without a physical contract in hand do I have a case to try and collect money owed? Should I pursue this matter in court or would that be a further waist of time and resources for me? Any info helps... Thank you.

Unfortunately, what you describe is more of a partnership than an employee-employer relationship.
If the situation is as you have stated, and if the evidence supports the terms of your oral agreement with your former business associate, you should have a valid claim that a court would enforce for the damages you allege.
