can someone sue me if they said that a third party told them that i called him a racial name

One can always sue; the question is whether or not someone can win.
Under the circumstances you described, even if true, if that's all that happened and it only happened one time, it is unlikely that anyone would sue you, let alone win a case.
If it is true, do not do it again.
