Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Washington

Student Records Access

My son is on a private college, PLU in Wa State. I have asked PLU for access to his student records and they have denied me access and my son has said he did not authorize my access. THey say under FERPA law they cannot grant me access without my sons approval. Is this accurate? I looked up the FERPA regulations and from what I read, if it is a parent requesting access, aproval is not required.

Re: Student Records Access

Ask PLU to give you the exact statutes and rules upon which they are relying in denying the information to you.

I assume your son is under 18. If he is 18 or older PLU is likely correct, because he is an adult.

I'm familiar with PLU since I live and work in Pierce County.

Good luck,
