Legal Question in Technology Law in Washington

Can I copy my employer's product

I work at a company and sell their software product. They recently came upon another product to add on as a module, but are doing a poor job pursueing it. I'm thinking about starting a company based on building a tool that does what this add on module does. I would build it based on functionallity I know rather than using their code. Is that legal?

Re: Can I copy my employer's product

This is an employment law or intellectual property law question. The answer is probably going to be found in your employment contract (it may be identified as a non-compete clause or a duty of loyalty clause). The intellectual property side of the question is affected by the nature of the module that you are looking at incorporating, is is commercial software or freeware or other, and what are the conditions of use. To answer this question conclusively would require more information.
