Legal Question in Construction Law in Washington

Scam

We (contractor) trusted this customer (''P'') too much. He appeared so genuine wanting to give a large chunk of money to our church and other missions through us from his inheritance since he had a terminal cancer. We did work (roof, paint, clean-up) on the contract he signed for in addition to loaning him $11,000+ cash believing his promises that money is coming ''tomorrow.'' We now know he has no intention to pay us any money (it was clear when he said, ''Take me to the court if you want the money.'') The lady living in the house (not sure about her relationship with him) wrote us a check one time ($40,000), which was written on an account with insufficient account. We really appreciate your help on what we can or should do. Thank you very much for your time.

Re: Scam

The answer turns on whether you are a registered contractor or not.

If you are not, chances are you are out of luck. If you are registered, you may well be able to recover.
