Legal Question in Consumer Law in Washington

Consumer harassment

My family have been receiving phone calls from collection agencies for the woman who had our phone number before us. They have been rude, lied, and have called even after I have told them that the number they called is no longer hers, that is is mine. They have also said that the woman had given them my number that day and said that it is hers. The telephone company said that I can get caller ID and not answer the phone when collection agencies call, but I feel it's my right as a perosn who pays their bills not to have to take extra steps to avoid the calls. They should not be harassing my family. Is there any action I can take or some government agency I can contact. Thank you.

Re: Consumer harassment

I'm sorry that you have inherited a problem from a person you never even knew- how irritating.

If it didn't bother you, it would not be your problem. Because it bothers you, you need to take steps to make it stop.

The phone company is offering you an option that you can use, or alternatively, when a collection agency calls, demand their physical address, and the name of the person calling you. Then, use that information to write them a letter.

Politely and succinctly tell them your story, in just a paragraph or two, like you did here. At the bottom of the letter, indicate that you are sending a copy to the Attorney general, and then do so. Save a copy for your records, and send the letter certified (so you can prove you sent it).

Collection agencies have to be licensed by the State of Washington to operate in this state. If they get complaints, they risk losing their license. If they are pestering you, you can (and should) alert the AG about what's happening so they can take action.

I hope this helps - Powell
