Legal Question in Consumer Law in Washington

credit card charge

I rented my house out for almost two years and moved to canada. The renters moved out and I returned home. I ordered telephone service while in Canada and was told it would be connected on my arrival. It wasn't.I was then told I would have to pay the renters telephone bill before I could get service.Being elderly I have to have a telephone so reluctantly paid it.$335.They then reconnected their phone so I still didn't have my own phone. They then said they couldn't disconnect their phone without an order from them. After several phone calls I finally got their's disconnected and mine connected. There is a lot more to this but the bottom line is: What would happen if I reversed the charge on my credit card? I feel it was forced on me under the threat of no telephone service, which I had to have. I might add I paid $150 to have theirs reconnected which I didn't want. I know the telephone co. ran a credit check on me and found I have excellent credit,I also had an account with them for years and was never late in a payment. This has been very stressful for me,I have never heard of having to pay someone elses bill in order to get my own account. I have written a letter to customer relations and have not gotten a response.Thank you!

Re: credit card charge

Hello: Sorry about your bad experience, but your remedy is *not* against the phone company it is against your ex-tenants. They are the ones that left without paying the bill.

For next time: Be sure to have a resident agent living in the state who can deal with your tenants from here. It's part of the RLTA that the landlord have someone in the state. That might have prevented this situation.

I would suggest that you hire a private investigator to locate your ex tenants, and then sue them in small claims for sticking you with what was obviously their phone bill.

Hope that helps - Elizabeth
