Legal Question in Consumer Law in Washington

Future dues

Hi,

I signed a contract for a membership to a health studio, which stated that I was to be billed monthly and must provide written notice of cancellation, afterwhich I would be held to pay dues for membership up to thirty days after having provided the notice. I cancelled on 8/31 and am being billed for September dues. Am I held legally to pay these dues, in light of the fact that Washington State Law states: ''RCW 19.142.050

Notice of cancellation -- Refund.

After receipt of a written notice of cancellation, the health studio shall provide a refund to the buyer within thirty days. The health studio may require the buyer to return any membership card or other materials which evidence membership in the health studio. The buyer is entitled to a refund and relief from future obligations for payments of initiation or membership fees and use fees or dues as follows:

(1) The buyer is entitled to a refund of the unused portion of any prepaid use fees or dues and relief from future obligations to pay use fees or dues concerning use after the date of cancellation.'' Specifically, is my cancellation valid, and are these dues a ''future obligation,'' or can it be interpreted ''entitled to...relief from...dues?''

Re: Future dues

Short answer: Yes, you are legally obligated to pay September if the contract says 30 days notice and you cancelled August 31. You are also entitled to use the membership benefits for September as well if that is any consolation.
