Legal Question in Consumer Law in Washington

Moving and Storage

What are my options against a moving company fraud?

I am in the process of relocating from Henderson, NV to Seattle, WA. A person from the moving company came for physical estimation and he estimated at 4000 lbs. As per him this estimate was more than enough and he advised me to go for a binding contract as I would not have to pay anything for any extra weight. A quote for $2040 was given including a partial packing charge of $150.00 for 15 boxes.

The company came, packed, loaded my stuff in heir truck and went. Now after few days they had sent me an invoice having charges for boxes ($696.00), packing materials and extra weight of 1880 lbs charging me a total of $3976.80.

I am in the process of negotiating with them and I agreed to pay $500.00 extra on the original quote.

I would like to know what my options now are. Can the company stop delivering my stuff on the scheduled date if I don’t pay the extra amount they are charging?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks and regards!

Re: Moving and Storage

First thing Monday contact the Attorney General's office, Consumer Protection Division. You can efile a complaint, but you'll want to follow up with a call because this move is in process.

The facts you describe are unfortunately typical of unscrupulous movers. Please wait to continue negotiating until you have made contact with the AG.

You could also look up naca.org (national association of consumer attorneys) or use avvo.co ( a v v o) to locate a local attorney who can help you with this.

I hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
