Legal Question in Consumer Law in Washington

Restaurant Bill

I am a server at a restaurant. The customer paid with a debit card. The card was swiped multiple times; too much money was held resulting in bounced checks on the customer's account. Can the restaurant make me, the server, pay for the bounced check charges?

No, they cannot take them out of your wages. They cannot demand that you reimburse the customer or the restaurant for the charges.

if the restaurant wants to appease the customer, they can reimburse the customer for the charges. I've seen this go either way, depending.

But to answer your question you might want to look at Title 49 of the RCWs that covers employment issues.

Ms. Powell has said it all. The result would be the same in California.
