Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

Contract forgery

In 2003 my son-in-law purchased a boat for about $9000 through a dealer, on a 72-month contract. We have just found out (I have copies of the papers) that he forged (very badly) my father's signature. The boat was repossessed last year and now the bank is seeking payment, naturally. What should my father do? He is 88 and in poor health, and this is all very upsetting to him. Where do we start? The police or an attorney?

Re: Contract forgery

The forgery should be reported to the police. It is a crime.

You should take this entire situation to an attorney who understands contracts and elder law. In Seattle (or close by) I'd start with Margaret Dore, who is versed at issues involving older people.

The underlying question is going to be why did it take your father so long to learn his signature was forged?

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
