Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

credit card

My husband's ex girlfriend has filed suit against him for a credit card debt of 17,500. The card was in her name only. She is mentally ill and we have tried for the past 14 months to assist her with this card to reduce it or file bankruptcy but she has refused and now we get a letter from an attorney! What should we do?

Re: credit card

There is a world of difference between a letter from an attorney and a lawsuit.

If you are served with a lawsuit, go get a lawyer to help you.

if the lawsuit is truly frivolous, you can ask for (and get) your fees paid by the other party.

Letters from attorneys, no matter how awful or snotty or demanding do not require responses.

Neither should you feel obligated to explain to him why this isn't your problem; it's his job to make it your problem.

If your husband cosigned for the card, or assisted her to get it, that might be different.

Hope this helps. Powell
