Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

debt collection

The collection agency Asset Acceptance LLC in Warren, Michigan sent me a letter 10 days ago claiming to have purchased a debt from Citibank in the amount of $1100. I immediately pulled my credit report from all 3 bureaus and found NO record of my account with Citibank, either open or closed. Nothing. Which is odd since I remember having an account with Citibank, but more than 10 years ago. I do not believe I owe any money on this account. Will a standard Debt Validation form letter to the agency do the trick? I do not want to alert the credit bureaus to an account they do not even list, and I do not want Asset Acceptance to list it for collection with the bureaus either. What do I do? (I have the money, but do not want to pay money I don't believe I owe, and I am afraid if will only attract more sharks if I do. (I've already paid off Midland Credit management for larger amounts that I should probably have contested, but that's water, and a lot of money, under the bridge by now.)

Re: debt collection

Go read budhibbs dot com before you make any decisions about how to proceed, expecially with these collectors. You are right to be careful. When you send your debt validation request, send two copies - one certified one return receipt requested and the other regular first class and save a copy for your records.

Asset Acceptance is a known bottom feeder. They can (and do) make reports to the agencies about debts after the statute of limitations has run, which is what your situation sounds like.

Save the copies of the credit report you pulled which do not show the debt. Do not, at this point, admit anything about this alleged debt as the statute has run for their collecting on it. Hope you enjoy the Bud Hibbs site. Call if you need more help. Elizabeth Powell
